Common Mini-Split System Issues
Ductless mini-splits can last for 15 years or more with proper care. However, they may suffer a few component failures within their lifetime. For example, the blower motor in one of your mini-split indoor units may fail. If an air handler starts making unusual noises while running, suspect a fan issue. Sometimes, the noises can indicate misalignment or loose fan mounts, both of which we can easily fix. However, it can also indicate an impending motor failure. While that’s a bit more complex a repair, we can handle it as well.
We occasionally encounter mini-splits with refrigerant leaks, too. This can be due to poor installation quality. Since every mini-split requires refrigerant lines connecting each air handler to the outdoor unit, there are multiple potential failure points. Typically, leaks occur due to poor line flaring at connection points. The good news is that the problem has a simple solution: re-flare the lines to create a tight seal. Then, we can recharge your mini-split to the proper refrigerant pressure.
Some additional common mini-split problems include:
- Failed control boards
- Clogged condensate drain lines
- Faulty electrical wiring
- Error codes
Benefits of Timely Repairs
When your mini-split needs repair, it’s wise to have it done immediately. Continuing to run your mini-split while it’s malfunctioning can significantly worsen the problem. For example, if your mini-split experiences a refrigerant leak, continuing to use it risks damaging the compressor. That can turn a relatively minor repair into a much more complex one. In some cases, it may even force you to replace your mini-split prematurely.
Timely repairs also offer the following benefits:
- Extends system lifespan
- Minimizes repair costs
- Restores your indoor comfort
- Minimizes energy waste
